Nation pays homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his 149th birth anniversary

  • The day also marks the launch of 150th-anniversary celebrations of the Mahatma Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi International Sanitation Convention is also being organised at Rashtrapati Bhavan to mark the occasion

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will address the concluding session of the 4-day convention today.

  • United Nations will celebrate Gandhiji's birth anniversary as International Day of Non-Violence. The UN General Assembly had on 17 June 2007 voted to establish 2nd October as the International Day of Non-Violence.

PM Modi to inaugurate the first Assembly of the International Solar Alliance in New Delhi

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the first Assembly of the International Solar Alliance in New Delhi this evening in the presence of United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. 

  • The same event will also mark the inauguration of the second Indian Ocean Rim Association IORA Renewable Energy Ministerial Meeting, and the 2nd Global RE-Invest, Renewable Energy Investors’ Meet and Expo.  

  • The 2nd RE-INVEST aims at accelerating the worldwide effort to scale up renewable energy and connect the global investment community with Indian energy stakeholders.

International Sanitation Convention being organised in New Delhi to mark the start of 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Gandhi Ji

  • The four days long Mahatma Gandhi International Sanitation Convention will conclude today in New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres will address the convention today. 

  • The Mahatma Gandhi International Sanitation Convention is being organised by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation to mark the beginning of the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi, also coinciding with the fourth anniversary of the launch of Swachh Bharat Mission. 

  • Fifty-three Ministers of Sanitation from around the world and more than 160 international representatives from 68 countries are participating in the convention.

  • The international conference brings together Sanitation Ministers and other leaders in WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) from around the world. 

India, Uzbekistan agree to deepen strategic cooperation
  • India and Uzbekistan have decided to deepen strategic partnership in various areas, including security, counter-terrorism, trade and investment, science and technology and nuclear energy.

India on way to achieve Open Defecation Free status by 2019: Vice President

  • Vice President Venkaiah Naidu today said India is well on its way to achieve Open Defecation Free status by 2019. 

  • Addressing the Mahatma Gandhi International Sanitation Convention in New Delhi, Mr Naidu said an Open Defecation Free India is the best gift the nation can give to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary. 

SATAT initiative launched to promote Compressed Bio-Gas production

  • The government today launched an innovative initiative aimed at setting up of Compressed Bio-Gas production plants and make it available in the market for use in automotive fuels by inviting Expression of Interest from potential entrepreneurs. 

  • The initiative is aimed at providing Sustainable alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) as a development effort that would benefit both vehicle-users as well as farmers and entrepreneurs.

  • Six-day multi-media exhibition will be inaugurated by the Information and Broadcasting Minister Col Rajvardhan Rathore tomorrow evening.

Assam govt launches Wage Compensation Scheme for Pregnant Women in tea gardens

  • Under the scheme, an amount of Rs. 12,000 is to be given to the pregnant woman so that she could take care of herself and her unborn baby without compromising the livelihood of her family. 

  • Over 60,000 women are likely to be benefited.  The compensation of wages to pregnant women would be given in 4 instalments. The scheme is likely to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality in the tea growing areas.

  • The three-day Parakram Parv organised to showcase the courage, valour and sacrifice of the Indian Armed Forces concluded across the country last night. 

President gives assent to India's first good samaritan bill of Karnataka

  • President Ram Nath Kovind has given assent to a bill providing legal protection to the good samaritans in Karnataka, who help accident victims with emergency medical care within the golden hour. 

  • The bill - Karnataka Good Samaritan and Medical Professional (Protection and Regulation during Emergency Situations) Bill, 2016 -- received the President's assent today. 

  • With this, Karnataka has become the first state in the country to give legal protection to good samaritans.

Nobel prize for medicine won by cancer researchers

  • Two immunologists, James Allison of the US and Tasuku Honjo of Japan won the 2018 Nobel prize in medicine for discovery of a revolutionary approach to cancer treatment. 

  • The Nobel Assembly today said, both the scientists were honoured for their discovery of cancer therapy by inhibition of negative immune regulation.

  • Bangladesh has appointed a female officer as a major general for the first time in the country's 47 year history.

  • Army chief Aziz Ahmed and Quartermaster General Lt Gen Md Shamsul Haque presented the badge to Dr Susane Giti .

UAE re-affirms commitments to developing nuclear programme to highest safety standards

World Bank approves Country Partnership Framework for India to support its transition to higher middle- income country

  • World Bank Board has endorsed an ambitious five-year Country Partnership Framework (CPF) for India, which aligns with New Delhi's objectives of high, sustainable and inclusive growth.

  • The move is aimed at supporting India's transition to a higher middle-income country by addressing some of its key development priorities such as resource efficient and inclusive growth, job creation and building its human capital.
